On 14.09.2010 our group comprising of Serina, Shirley, Rose amd myself conducted a role play of students meeting in the study hall to carry out group study. Their conversation begins with:
I just dont get it
I didnt come here to read books
I came to learn how to do it.
The despair of the students come from the way their tutor delivers their lecture by reading the power points' not deviating away from it at any piont in time and not allowing the students to raise questions.
Whilst role playing , we found ourselves adding on more comments than we had originally thought of and acting as if we were students ourselves. This little play leaves us to reflect on our teaching styles and are we adapting to our studentds needs.
Most students are simply asking: show me how to do it, I need to learn how to apply it.
I beleive with help of technology, we can equip ourselves to train our students effectively and we need to start by training ourselves first and adapt to changes quickly.
Good morning Nick
ReplyDeleteWe have to reflect on the roleplay, the theory and the learning.
So I will kick it off and hope to god that it's right........
it was good to actually complete this activity because during our classes for CCT we can be sitting for a longtime listening attentively.
In my opinion Nuddy walks the talk with his lecture time and gets us actively involved.
The learning for me is showing us how we can be creative in our delivery and the 20/80 theory is something that I try and deliver in every session that I teach.
I am always open to improvement in regards to my teaching because I always reflect on how I feel as a student and wonder how I would feel if I was the student receiving the information being delivered.
Hope I'm on the right track????
Hi Serena
ReplyDeleteThe question now is What did we learn from our role play and what could we do better as lecturers.
I think that we need to read our audience in order to deliver the message. This is not by getting them to complete little tasks either to confirm whether they are audio, visual etc I have found these questionnaires unhelpful and not completely true, it also starts to give labels ie all pacific island people are visual, and this my opinion only. If we use the blended learning theory where we apply a bit of everything into our delivery we should be able to deliver the message. I always check with students whether they have captured the learning and try and give a few different examples.
ReplyDeleteThen get the students to offer examples from their view to check that they understand.
anyway this is just my thoughts for the moment I will probably come back with another one later.
I have been reading the comments posted and reflecting back on the first session with Helen where she talked about the types of learning theory- How do people learn which then lead to designing the learning activity.
ReplyDeleteThe role play demonstrated a lecturing style that is linked with "I will tell you" and what we were asking for in the role play was Active theory - we wanted to practice, talk, construct, observe and have it demonstrated as we believed we would learn best when we do stuff.
People learn best when the teaching provides elements of flexibility, contexualised, communicated in a language that is understood and provides opporutnity for practice.
As example of a paper I teach on now incoporates the following teaching methods and the design supports the teaching-
Group work
Feedback
Sharing ideas
Q.A
participation
engagement
humor
feedback
theory
introduction to next session.
I believe this combination provides an opporutnity to engage with theory and prepares them for their vocation.
HI all, just wondering if the role play has been loaded on the wiki for comment?
ReplyDeleteHi Shirley
ReplyDeleteWe seemed to have lost the video that Nuddy took, so It does not really matter now. We rtae to complete our personal reflections and post it to Nuddy in the format he is going to provide.
Thanks Nick, it is a shame as I would like to have taken it the next step and using technology to critique/discuss etc.
ReplyDeleteHI everyone am just wanting to join the group am having lots of trouble still just checking if this works
ReplyDeleteHI everyone
ReplyDeleteFinally it has taken me a while to figure this one out, but got there in the end.
Upon doing the session on acting out the students feeling bored with the teacher. I believe that this does really happen in class, and I have come across this myself when the teacher really is not engaging me in their class.
For me within the nursing department we really utilise lots of learning styles to ensure that we can accomodate everyone. Our teaching audience varies greatly from young to old, and also because of the diverse culture we teach within MIT it is sometimes the lack of resources that these students have assess to will be a hinderence in our self directed out of class learning.
We encorporate group work, online discussions, quizes, played who wants to be a millionare, pub quizzes etc to make the learning fun for the students.
